The biggest part of Australian tourism market—Chinese visitors

More and more Chinese visitors like to travel to Australia for their vacation, and the reason that why they choose Australia as their destination needs to be explored that can improve Australian tourism market developments. High quality environment, cheaper and high quality products and a chance of parents to join their child’s graduation are the three main reasons.

The increasing number of Chinese visitors has took the great status in Australian tourism market, Chinese visitors is the biggest consumer group. This situation has influence on the other filed in whole Australian society, such as overseas education and property investment. So the reason of Chinese are keen on traveling to Australia cannot be ignored.

The high quality of environment in Australia is the first thing to attractive Chinese visitor, especially the air quality. Owing to that Chinese air quality is in a worrying environment issue in Chinese society. PM 2.5 is the most serious issue especially in Beijing, moreover, PM 2.5 still has negative influence on citizen’s healthy. As a result, the high air quality will has the most attraction of Chinese tourists.

Chan Chen, who is a Chinese visitor traveling to Australia more than three times in five years, said, “I have travelled to Australia biennially, just because air quality in Australia better than China. I love the weather and the sunshine in Australia, which I cannot feel in China in several years.” Xin Cheng, who is a graduate of the University of Sydney, accompanied with her grandparents and parents, said, “I just want to let my grandparents to feel fresh air and sunshine.”

High air quality is taking the great part in choice of Chinese visitors during them making a travelling plan. Sunshine is also another aspect when visitors doing a choice, owing to that PM 2.5 blocking the sunshine, so people cannot receive Vitamin D, so there are some healthy issue in Chinese citizens.

Second aspect of reason that Chinese visitors choose Australia as the first choice is that the graduation of their child. To join graduate ceremony and taking a trip in Australia is the reason of most Chinese parents.

Boshen Wang, who is a manager in a travel agency only for Chinese visitor, said, “Most of Chinese elder visitor travelling to Australia just for their children’s graduate ceremony, and this may the only chance to travel to overseas.” Boshen added, “Because the working schedule affects that they do not have the spare time to travel abroad. Owing to this situation, my company will give the different specific plan for different clients according to their own condition.” Ting Wang who is a mother of a student in the University of Sydney gave a statement about her own travelling experience. “I am very busy in daily working life, I do not have time to travel, not only for overseas trip, but also in domestic travel, if my daughter do not study in Sydney, and maybe I would never have a chance travel to Australia in recent years.” Moreover, she is a client of Boshen’s company, for the reason that she chose an agency for her trip, she said, “I just want to let my trip easily and find an agency to help me to do all the application thing and making a professional plan is better than I do this things by myself.” However, Qiuchen Xie, who is a mother for a student in the University of New South Wales, has different opinion. “I did travelling plan by my son and myself, in my person opinion, this time maybe is my the only chance to travel to Australia, so I want to do the suitable plan for myself, and the experience of the application is a good challenge for me.”

Owing to that more and more Chinese students study in Australia, the tourism market in Australia has been drove. The consumer group in this situation is Chinese parents. In another hand, this will also drive the education income of Australian university. These parents will spread good information of Australian education to their friends, which will attract more Chinese students study abroad.

Finally, the reason of Chinese visitors travel to Australia is cheaper and high quality stuffs. The quality of Chinese production is a serious issue, especially, the milk powder of baby. This is the reason that a new career named Daigou occurs, which is a group of Chinese people who study or live in overseas to do purchase to Chinese market in personal way. The most popular production is milk powder of baby.

Jie Shu is a manager of a souvenir shop, she said, “Many of my costumers are visitors from China, during the travelling process they will buy many Australian products for their friends and family. Some of them we called MPB (Milk Powder Buyer).” One of the interviewees in the shop said, “I do not want to let my name in a feature, but I can tell my personal experience about the aim of my travelling. When the first time I travelled to Sydney, some of my friends asked me to buy some milk powder for their little baby, and I found it is a good way to earn some money during my trip, I know it is illegal, but this really attract me to do this business. And the cheaper production is really good for me to send gift for my friends and for myself.”

Despite buying some souvenirs during trip is an illegal way to earn money, but still many Chinese visitors doing this kind of business. Moreover, cheaper production really attracts some young ladies to travel to Australia to buy it.

As for Chinese visitors, Australia is heaven of travelling. High quality environment, cheaper products and suitable travelling service specific for Chinese parents, these elements are the good for Chinese visitors experience in Australia.

Why more and more Chinese visitor travel to Australia

In 13, January, 2016, Jamie Freed who is a journalist in Sydney Morning Herald reported a news named “Annual Chinese visitor numbers exceed 1 million for first time”. In this press, Jamie stated that the phenomenon about Chinese visitor is a big group of Australian traveling market. Chinese visitors cost $ 7.7 billion annual in Australia.

According to the Tourism Australia report in 2013 the total spend of Chinese is $ 4.8 billion. Between 2003 to 2013, education took the first place in the purpose of visit. Traveling for the holiday has increasing trend. The data shows that more and more Chinese like to travel to Australia for their holiday.

Owing to that the air quality of China is awful. PM 2.5 is the most significant air issue for Chinese society. PM 2.5 is not like a normal air pollution, it will have terrible influence in human healthy. So many Chinese visitor like to travel to Australia for the clean and clear air.

Story Angle

In my feature story, I want to explore the deep reason of Chinese travelers to Australia. The air quality may is one of the reasons of Chinese visitors travel to Australia. However, there may different reasons for Chinese visitor. Owing to that the whole world communication and development of information and technology, Chinese visitor prefer to travel abroad to feel different lifestyle in different country under different culture background.

Income of Chinese visitors has developed, they will have enough economy to support their traveling requirement. Some of them want to visit their children, because they are international students. So the reason of their traveling need to be explored. Moreover these reasons will give some view for Australian government and organization to develop the policy to enhance visitor to build the traveling market.

The way that Chinese travelers chosen is another angle to my feature. Some of them will choose the agency to help them do the whole thing include application of visa, tour route, booking hotel and flights. Some of them prefer to do the plan all by themselves, this is also connect with international traveling mode.

In my feature story, I will interview a manager named Mars of a travel agency only for Chinese visitor, he is my personal friend. His agency will give the specific opinion for the Chinese customization travel. They will have the information that the reason of Chinese visitors travel to Australia. They will give analysis of market report of the influence on Australian tourism by Chinese visitor.

I also will interview Chinese visitor in Australia right now. To find the real reason that they choose Australia not the US or other countries.

The participation of users in social media

As for the participation of users in social media, the first point that need be discussed is that what is social media. Social media is a term of social net work sites, and it is an online media practice (Hinton & Hjorth, 2013). Recently, social media is being more popular, users can get information from social media platforms rather than haploid from newspaper, radio, television and news website. Social media also provides platform for people to share information and connect with others (byod, 2012). Nowadays, the famous social media platforms are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Wechat, Weibo, Linked In and Pinterest. From 2012-2014, the number of users of social media had been increased, especially, Facebook occupied the most popular social media platform (Duggan, Ellison, Lampe, Lenhart & Madden, 2015).

Secondly, the most important part of social media is that the users. Two roles of users in social media are controller and colltrolled (Hinton & Hjorth, 2013). As for controllers, users can produce and control media that is the new structure of control and power (Hinton & Hjorth, 2013). In another hand, users are controlled by social media. Owing to that, the social media will offer some information that citizens easily to believe, some of these information was unreal which easily need to cause the panic.

Hinton and Hjorth (2013) states “social media is fundamentally a participative mediaum.” User generated content (UGC) and user created content (UCC) are two forms of the participation. User created content (UCC) is that the content created by users, and user generated content (UGC) is similar to user created content (UCC), but the content made by others (Hinton & Hjorth, 2013).

User created content

In the user created content, technological drivers, social drivers, economic drivers and legal drivers are the four main drivers (Vickery & Wusch-Vincent, 2007). The broad useage in the recent social media and the participation occupies a significant role in social media (Hinton & Hjorth, 2013). Owing to that participative forms becoming mainstream, such as social network sites (SNSs), this is a condition of that increasing number of citizen journalists which is challenging the formal news media and journalism (Meikle & Kedden, 2010). User created content (UCC) is already became an economic condition in nowadays (Vickery & Wusch-Vincent, 2007). The most obvious effect is for the information communication technology (ICT) products and the newly user created content (UCC) platforms (Vickery & Wusch-Vincent, 2007). Another impact of user created content (UCC) is for the social field, owing to that user created content (UCC) will provide the platform and encourage the consumers to sharing the news, information and opinions in order to achieve the participation (Vickery & Wusch-Vincent, 2007). This is one of the reasons that enhance number of citizen journalism, some of them has the professional skills, for example, photography, video shooting, and sense of news.

Users as producers

In the Web 2.0 age, users are the significant participator of the social media sites. So the user created content and user generated content have been appeared. Attendant idea is that the users are the producer of media, in another word, the word “produser” will be more accurate, just mains that the users not only a user of social media, but also the producer in social media (Bruns, 2008).

There are the challenges and opportunities of social media. Collaborative projects let the companies of social media need to alert that the information for many users, and the reliability information on the social media platform will be doubted (Kaplan & Haenlein, 2010). However, the opportunities of social media is that the convince and vast users in social media platform, which can get more participation with users.

Citizen Journalism

Citizen journalism is a new form of the journalism in user created content (UCC), it is a conflict between the form of traditional journalism mode and participative media (Hnition & Hjorth, 2013). Social media provides a different platform for the news story collection from traditional pattern, for instance, collecting way of newspapers. Social media offers the users to create the news story that they have experienced, sometimes, the citizen journalist is one of the eyewitness in a incident, in which has the intuitionistic feeling about the incident. So the problem is that citizen journalists will use the motional words to report the incident, different from the professional journalists use the objective word and the professional form in order to report the truth of the incident. The professional journalists have been trained for the interview and research skills which are the two important skills that can approach the truth of the news story (Hnition & Hjorth, 2013). Citizen journalists do not need to follow the codes and the rules of the professional journalism, it will lead to the citizen journalists do not working on their writing work (Hnition & Hjorth, 2013). However, the advantage of citizen journalism is that they can report the in time news story for the public which is the short of the professional journalists.

The theory in Photofilm campaign

Photofilm is a brand for the photography and film shooting, so this is also my social media campaign in this semester. The main campaign is on Facebook, owing to that Facebook occupies the most users in the whole social media sites. Photofilm provides the platform for the audiences that they have interest in photography and film shooting. So some consumers also created content about photography or film, which are not only focus on the skills level, but also has the commentary about camera, film and image. The interaction between Photofilm and audiences is pretty well, the participation of users has been achieved in Photofilm. User created content (UCC) has been developed in Photofilm social media campaign. Moreover, some users become kind of citizen journalists, they will post something about photo and film to share with others and the firm. Some of the news from citizen journalists still have valuable information.During the exchange information, users can get more knowledge of this filed. Likewise, Photofilm will share some other news from other platform news in order to discuss with users, and will share story and news created by users in order to encourage their passion to interact. Photofilm also establish an activity, many users who have interest in photography, users can communicate with others offline, which can improve the interaction between firm and users into an intimate relationships with other strangers or friends.

In conclusion, nowadays, social media sites already occupy the significant part in our daily life, many users use social media not only communicating with friends and families, but also obtain the information and news. Users play an important role in social media sites, as “produser” means the users act as a producer in the social media sites. As a result, to be a successful social media campaign, users interaction take a great part. However, users is not the only one determining factor of social media campaign, in time communication is another factor affect the successful social media campaign.

A commentary on a Wikinews article Bomb Explosion in Lahore Kills More Than 65 on Easter

I will chose the article named Bomb explosion in Lahore kills more than 65 on Easter, and I will give some suggestions in order to improve the scannability of the online news story, and this news posted on Wikinews. I also found another news story on The Sydney Morning Herald World online news Pakistan bomb blast: Woman and children among dozens killed in Lahore park explosion.

The headline of this news is clear to show the accident happened(when, where, what, how). The article also has reported the details about the news. Moreover, it has the quote of an eye-witness in order to support the incident news. There is not very many paragraphs to report the news which is more clear and easy read for readers.

As for the improvement of the online news and the scannability, I recommend using subheadings to guide the audience get the information directly. This article need has more news images or the video to show the incident, however, if it use images and video need to have the notice about the negative influence of the audience because the images and video may let readers feel bad.
